Originally, sand drains were used to accelerate consolidation of soft clays.  Sand drains can be installed using conventional drilling equipment, and can certainly be done by anyone with a drill.  However, wick drains require specialized installation equipment.  Unless you’re interested in making the capital investment for the equipment, you simply can’t do it on your own.
